The files of the Dark Trooper project were so heavly encrpyted that only a few every knew of its existence. The Imperial Engineers that worked on the project were sworn to secrecy, and the Rebels that faced these machines in combat rarely lived long enough to pass on any information. There was only one Rebel that did live long enough to pass on information and that was Kyle Katarn a commando and Jedi Knight. The briefings to the Alliance Command, along with the classified data that was sliced by the Bothan spies helped to reveal critical facts about the Galactic Empire's attempt to create super stormtroopers. It also look as if Katarn had almost single-handedly derailed the entire undertaking. General Rom Mohc a very decorated Imperial officer that was obsessed with personal combat, came up with the Dark Troopers as his brainchild. He had also vociferously protested the construction of the Death Star. He argued that all soldiers deserved the chance to face their enemy one-on-one, and when the Death Star was destroyed above Yavin Mohc was given the perfect opportunity to advance his cause. He had several dozen of these mechanical men that swiftly went from protype to the finished version aboard the Arc Hammer (a titanic spacegoing construction facility compeleted at the ship yards of Kuat). The first combat test of these droids was a brutal one-sided massacre that utterly decimated the Rebel base on Talay, and an impressed Darth Vader then ordered Mohc to continue with production. The droids had three distinct stages, and each one was suitable for armed combat. The Phase One Dark Trooper was little more than just a metal skeleton that was primitive but relentless. The units structural frame had a forearm shield, and razor-edged carving blade that were cast from phrik, which is an exceptionally durable alloy that is primarly found on the moons of the Gromas system. The second Dark Trooper or Phase Two was a standard combat unit, which was built with an additonal phrik body shell that made it thougher than the Phase One unit. It was also equipped with a repulsorlift engine and flight jets, which helped give it superior maneuverability in the air, and each of these Phase Two models carried a devastating assault cannon tha fired plasma shells and long-range explosives. The Phase Three Dark Trooper was conceived as the ultimate Dark Trooper, and Katarn claims he faced only one. It also appears that it is very likely that this one was the only one and was stationed aboard the Arc Hammer as a prototype for a planned but uncompleted line. The Phase Three was even more mamouth than the Phase Two and was an unstoppable behtmoth that sported a very nasty cluster of firing tubes that conected to a seemingly endless supply of seeker missiles. Even though these rockets are slow they are lethal due to the fact that they home in on a target's heat signature and they pack enough detonite to obliterate the strongest personal shielding. The Phase Three unit had also been designed as a unit that was to operate independently but it could also be worn by a human operator as an exosuit. Katarn's destruction of the Arc Hammer cost the Galactic Empire billions of credits and marked the end of the Dark Trooper project. Emperor Palpatine still smarting from the loss of his Death Star, was so infuriated by this new setback, that he refused to approve funding for a new construction facility. | |
