Em Teedee is a small handheld translator droid that specializes in human/wookiee communications, and was programmed by the famous C-3PO. When the wookiee Lowbacca decided to attend Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy his uncle Chewbacca foresaw a problem. That is Wookiees can't vocalize Basic speach, and very few humans can understand the barking, growling language of Shyrriiwook. To be able to spare his nephew frusterating miscommunications, Chewbacca had C-3PO collaborated to build a compact self-aware translation module. Chewbacca got the finest componets from the Thikkiiana fabrication facility on Kashyyyk and assembled a metallic silver oval slightly longer than his hand. The flat-rounded front of the device was fitted with sensory inputs that resembled a crude face. The unit had twin photoreceptors that provided visual data and could adjust to diffrent light wavelengths and magnifications. Between the photoreceptors there was a small rough protuberance that covered an array of specialized sensors that include: an olfactory and temperature receptors. A perforated, oval vocoder grille completed the facial features and also gave the droid an open-mouth, surprised apperance. C-3PO took great pride in programming his tiny counterpart, and because of his small size Em Teedee only could hold a few knowledge patterns that were countained in 3PO's AA-1 verbobrain. The droid was programmed with Shyriiwook, Basic and a few other languages as well as information on Wookiee customs and traditions. Chewbacca also relized that Em Teedee would be useful in other functions he installed limited databases on planetary geology, starship repair and hyperspace navigation. The droid could also be linked to any computer network via the interface port. Em Teedee was also equipped with a multiposition circuit breaker on the back of the droids back to turn him off. Since Em Teedee had no moving parts he required others to get him from place to place. Eventually Em Teedee was fitted with an array of microrepulsor jets that allowed him to fly. Em Teedee's success as a miniaturized translator has sparked industry interest. There are now unconfirmed rumors that Cybot Galactic plans to mass produce a similar design for a consumer market. | |
