The world of Aridus is one of many backwater desert worlds, and is the home to the short lizardlike creatures called Chubbits, who cross the planet's sandy terrain in windrunners, which are wheeled vehicles with large sails. The planet includes other lizardlike creatures, which can be tamed and used as mounts. The natural inerference from the Aridus atmosphere makes all long-range communications totally impossible, and after the Galactic Empire took control of the world, they built an immense Iron Tower to overcome the problem. This automated tower acted as both a signal amplifer and a power transformer, that allowed unrestricted communications and supplying energy to run the Imperial Hover Trains. There are hazardous lava pits located in the region immediately surrounding the tower, and the towers powerful signals crippled the nervous systems of the Chubbits, and eventually killed them. Durring the Galactic Civil War the Rebel Alliance supplied the Chubbit resistance fighters with weapons, and following the Battle of Yavin Darth Vader set up a trap on the planet for Luke Skywalker by making it appear that Ben Kenobi had returned from the dead and was working with the Aridus resistence. The fake Kenobi was an actor that had been surgically made to look like Ben, and when Luke managed to escaped the trap he also partially destroyed the Iron Tower.
