Unlike starfighters that have only a few sensors, large capital ships can have hundreds of specialized sensor arrays. Imperial Star Destroyers scan space with dozens of directional long-range electro-photo receptors and over a hundred full-spectrum transceivers and dedicated-energy receptors. A score of broadband transceivers monitor all communications ranging from comlinks too subspace bands to radionics frequencies. These monitoring devices are looking for transmissions that are "hidden" under natural X-ray emissions or background static. Com-Scan computers instantly process and analyze this increadable volume of information. These units are preprogrammed to look for warining signs of enemy ships like, power fluctuations that might indicate the presence of a ship or an unexpected energy spike that could reveal a power generator hidden by a sensor-stealth system. When something is detected the computer automatically activates reserve sensor data banks for a more detailed look. Com-Scan operators can stand a better chance of detecting starships or hidden bases by being able to compare data from both sensor and communications networks that a stand-alone sensor array could. An example of this is when the Super Star Destroyer Executor emerged in the Hoth system, it confirmed the presence of a Rebel Alliance's Base by detecting an energy shield around the sixth planet. Com-Scan control bays have rows of consoles for recording and analyzing data, while hologram projectors and flatscreen monitors display enemy fleet movements and run battle simulations. The controls are usally monitored by droids that are programmed with complex data sorting algorithms and are usally paired with highly skilled communications and sensors officers, that carefully evaluate the data to determine which information is important enough to foward to the vessel's command staff. Com-Scan systems are also used to coordinate large-scale fleet actions, by using encrypted subspace and HoloNet transmissions to direct strikes precisely against targets in several systems. Similar Com-Scan systems are used at military bases. The Rebel Alliance used a com-scan unit at the Battle of Yavin to remotely assisted Alliance pilots after the Death Star jammed the sensors aboard their X-Wing and Y-Wing fighters. The Alliance used the MicroThrust OrC- 19 Com-Scan Integrator Console at their base on Hoth, which helped General Rieekan to coordinate the ground defense of the base and the evacutation of the transport ships. Similar systems like the MicroThrust CO-0012 are sometimes used aboard military command speeders, like the Imperial Uulshos QH-7 Chariot.
