Holocrons are custom-built instructional tools that are used by the Jedi Masters. The holocrons are small crystalline cubes that store volumes of holographic records documenting the history and lore of the Jedi Knights. There are diffrent types of holocrons, some are just simple cubes, while other have unusal geometric shapes or ornate symbols etched into their crystalline faces. Each holocron is unique, and with that each one also has it own way to access the information, which can range from touching a specific pannel to speaking a certain phrase aloud. The Jedi Holocron that was built by the famed Master Bodo Baas was automatically activated when it was grasped by anyone attuned to the Force. The technology of the holocrons is what seems to be a forgotten one, where many crystals were connected to form a complex latticework that serves the holocron purpose of recording and replaying holographic images and sound. The holocrons also appear somehow to have unlimited storage capacity and they have no visible energy source. Some of the holocrons have information depicting historical events like the Jedi's struggle to defeat the Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun, or they can document a Master's training and medication techniques. Also the holocrons were used by the Jedi Masters to explain newly formulated Force abilities and to record their theories about the nature of the Force. These devices served the Jedi a way passing the Jedi knoweledge from generation to generation to ensure that the lessons of the past (both tragic and heroic) would never be forgotten. No only are the Holocrons a collection of static recordings but they are an interactive teaching tool, and an intuitive logic module that faithfully re-creates the images and personalities of past Jedi Masters, who acts as that single holocrons host. The Jedi that was the one to build the holocron is its primary host, while other contributors add their images and personalities to host their specific sections. The host of the holocron guides the Jedi Student through specific lessons, imparting information, and also testing their abilites. These holocrons also help to pose philosophical challanges about the nature of the Force to help the Jedi students to master their new abilites, while still remaining in harmony with the light side of the Force. The holocrons can detect a student or masters abilites in the Force and are able to restrict access to sensitive information (primarly techniques related to advanced Forces powers) until those students have proven their ability to use the knowledge responsibly. Due to the actions of Emperor Palpatine many of the holocrons have disappeared from the galaxy, during Palpatine's quest to obliterate the Jedi Knights from the galaxy. The Jedi Luke Skywalker first learned about the holocrons while he was under the instruction of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he didn't actually see one till a decade later, when he confronted the reincarnated Emperor Palpatine, who possessed the Holocron of Master Bodo Baas. Luke and Princess Leia Organa Solo were able to liberate the holocron during the battle, and Luke used the device to greatly improve his knowledge about the Force. Unfortunately the holocron was destroyed during the struggle against the Emperor's forces. It is belived that there are still many holocrons that survied, and have been hidden in the isolated huts of the long-dead Jedi Knights, waiting to be discovered again.
