Military homing beacons are small devices that can be hidden aboard starships. It emits a signal from its internal hyperspace transponder which allows the "bugged" vessel to be tracked accross the galaxy. A homing beacon works by interacting with the HoloNet, which is a network that stretches throughout the galaxy and consists of hundreds of thousands of satellites that transmit messages throughout hyperspace. The homing beacon uses these satillites by sending a short coded burst which is recorded each time the vessel passes a HoloNet communication signal known as a S-thread. The advantage of this is that a ship on average passes atleast one S-thread per hour, which helps the homing beacon to track the vessel within the New Republic's boandries. The homing beacon's signal is automatically logged into the HoloNet and fowarded to the beacon's control computer, then after it recivies the signal the control computer then knows the vessels exact possition and it can then determine the ships possible destinations. Also when the ship leaves hyperspace the beacon automatically broadcasts a location update that is accurate to within one parsec. Even though homing beacons are extremely expensive they do play a vital role in intellegence gathering. This was proven by the Galactic Empire when the Rebel Alliance stole the technical readouts of the Death Star battle station, and an Imperial homing beacon that was hidden aboard Princess Leia Organa's Rebel Blockade Runner "Tantive IV," which allowed the Imperial Star Destroyer "Devastator" to follow and capture Tantive IV before Leia could deliver the plans to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Then when Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon was capture by the Death Star, Darth Vader had an Imperial XX-23 homing beacon hidden inside the smuggling freighter, which led the Empire right straight to the main Rebel base on Yavin Four. Just like the Imperial XX-23 the Neuro-Saav XXt-26 is a small, lightweight homing beacon. It uses a narrow-beam hyperspace transponder signal which is configured to blend into the ship's "background noise" (caused by drive emissions), which makes the beacon almost impossible to be detected except by dedicated communications scanners. | |
