Portable Scanners are handly units handheld units, but they are less powerful than their counterparts that are aboard starships. The Cryoncorp. EnhanceScan General-Purpose Scanner is a typical multipurpose sensor unit and is the choice for the Rebel Alliance's scouts. The Enchanced unit is an enhanced version of the earlier Lifedetec bioscanner, with communications, metal detection, and motion sensor modules added to it. The bioscanner is capable of detecting life-forms within 1,500 meters, and along with that its computer memory banks are loaded with over three hundred diffrent creatures, so the user can quickly identify the being. The units communications sensor can not transmit messages, but it does automatically intercept any standard-frequency comlink transmission that are within three kilometers. The EnhanceScan is equipped with motion sensors that are capable of detecting any movement within five hundred meters and can be programmed to sound an alarm, so the unit can be even used as an automated camp sentry. The units is also able to be programmed to search for concentrations of specific metals within a maximum operating range of approximately one hundred meters. The EnhanceScan's computer can operate all four scanner modes simultaneously, and depending on the mode in use the scanner's read-out screen displays the shape and vital data of detected life-forms, the charactistics of intercepted data, or detected metal concentrations. Also in each mode the specific location and movement is indicated. The units data ports allow it too link with computers, datapads, and droids to exchange data, and its six rechargable power cells last for up to ten days of continuous operation. Even thought the EnhanceScan combines several distinct sensors into one unit, single purpose units are also popular because they offer good performance in an economical package. These specialized scanners can gather data about life-forms, comlink transmissions, energy emissions, electromagnetic or repulsorlift emissions, and geothermal activity. There are also sonic sensors that can amplify sounds at long range or scan above and below the user's hearing range. Visual scanners may be equipped with long-range magnifiers or infrared or ultraviolet optics. Other specilized scanners include medical scanners, technical scanners (which examine repulsorlift drives and other common machinery), and geological scanners, which detect precious minerals and ore deposits. These diffrent units can range in price widely and performance. The units durability is important, and it is often wise to spend a few extra credits to get a scanner with a sturdy casing so that the internal sensors are not easily knocked out of alignment or damaged. | |
