Throughout the Imperial Army and Navy rank cylinders are standard-issue encoding devices. Each military officer can carry one of more of these cylinders, which can be used to gain entry to restricted facilities, and sensitive portions of the Imperial Computer Network. These cylinders allowed the Imperial Military to operate in an efficient manner while keeping confidential data from Rebel spies. These rank cylinders are still used in many Imperial remnant systems, and some New Republic member goverments employ similar measures, such as issuing coded identification cards, and electronic keys, while using scanners to confirm an individual's identity. Each of the rank cylinders contains a combination scomp link and data terminal that allows interfacing with computers, droids, and security locks. The cylinders allow for custom-programmed coding and identification chips that list each officer's identity and overall security clearances for specific departments, research labs, and prototype testing facilities. These cylinders also contain the individual's voice, retinal, and dermatoglyphic records for further verification via specialized scanners. Whenever an officer tries to access a computer network or enter an area protected by a security lock, he will be required to slide his personal command cylinder into a security terminal or data port and enter his personal access code. And any incorrect pass codes, or any attempt to access unauthorized facilities or computer data automatically sounds a security alarm. The computer network must clear each cylinder before any access will be granted, and then the automated system will control the flow of information and will limit the access while minimizing the number of living security guards needed to protect a facility. The Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War issued updated command cylinders with new pass codes at least once a month to prevent Rebel agents from using stolen cylinders to infiltrate Imperila bases and computer databases. The Imperial computer network kepts a detailed log of each cylinder's activity, noting all facilities entered and any data files that were accessed. This electronic record was a valuable tool for Imperial Intellegence and Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) agents who often relied on access records to locate suspected Rebel spies. These code cylinders were issued to almost every Imperial, low-ranking officers or technicians were issued one cylinder, but high-ranking officers with access to multiple facilities carried several command cylinders. The regulations of the Imperial military called for high-ranking officers to display their command cylinders on their front shirt pockets, adjacent to the rank insignia. Technicians and engineers often carried their rank cylinders in other pockets, on their belts, or on chains hanging around their necks. | |
