Destroys Ships

Space mines have been a staple of space warfare for a milennia, and are used to block travel routes and destroy enemy vessels. Mines are useful in situations where natural hazards are located such as pulsars, gas clouds, and ion storms to help limit travel to a few well established routes. Mines are also used for planetary strategies, by blocking all starship traffic onto or off a world. There is a wide variety of mines from ones that look like crude asteroids to sophisticated devices such as the Defender Ion Mine. Asteroids are easily detected by sensors, which makes them more of a nuisance than a hazard. Most of the time pirates like to use asteroids to block hyperspace routes to be able to raid ships. Automated space mines are much more of a danger to starships, because they can often home in on a vessel without being detected. Most of the time automated mines are the most common but there are some military forces that use remote controlled mines. The proximity mine is the most common type of space mine, because of the simpleness of them, they are programmed to just explode when any ship passes within their blast range. Merr-Sonn's Defender ion mine is a multiuse deep space mine that is used by the New Republic, planetary goverments, and Imperial remnant forces. The mine features a cloaking revvers and particle-beam scatter projectors that hide the mine from sensor readings, which renders it almost invisable. When a vessel comes within ten kilometers of the mine the Defender's ion cannon neutralizes the ship, while a narrow-band high-frequency transmitter relays data to the mines control station, which is often aboard a nearby ship. The advantages of minefields is that they are relatively easy to set up, they require almost no maintenance, and are exceptionally difficult for enemy forces to clear. Mines are used widely in planetary combat, the mines range from variable-altitude repulsorlift mines to simple land mines such as the Conner Ship Systems 3HX3. When the repulsor-field or life-form sensors detect passing troops or vehicles, the 3HX3 launches one of its explosive charges three meters into the air. Each of the explosives can severly damage light craft.
