Planetary shields are systems that use layers of charged energy to dissipate turbolaser blasts and destroy space debris on contact, this helps protect planets from devastating effects of attacks as well as asteroid and comet strikes. Planetary shields consume so much energy while in use it is very impractical to keep them powered at all times. Since some planetary shields can take up to 30 minutes to activate in an attack many planets use a network of planetary turbolasers and planetary ion cannons to drive back the attackers while the shield is coming on line. Planetary shields do vary in size and power output, and a small unit like the Kuat Drive Yards DSS-O2, like the one used by the Rebels at Hoth, can only protect an area approximately fifty kilometers in diameter. These units are excellent for deflecting bombardments from orbit, they do nothing to prevent troopships and bombers from landing beyond the shields perimeter. So as a result these shields are normally used by bases to maintain an anitvehicle, laser cannons and other defenses. Which makes attackers go into a grueling ground engagement like what happened at the Battle of Hoth. The shield that the Galactic Empire used at Endor was a CoMar SLD-26 shield generator, that was used to project a protective shield around the second Death Star while it was under construction. The famous Grand Admiral Thrawn had devised several methods of counteracting planetary shield networks. At the planet of Ukio he slipped several cloaked vessels into the planet's atmosphere while the shield was down. When Thrawn arrived with his assault force he commanded the Jedi Joruus C'baoth to use his Force skills to coordinate his attack. The Star Destroyers would then fire there turbolasers at the shield generators and the blasts would splash against the shield harmlessly, but the cloaked ships would then from beneath the shields fire simultaneously, making it seem as though the shots were passing right through the shields, which caused the Ukians to panic and surrender. | |
