When the Trade Federation began construction its droid army the Executive Board new that it would need stellar ships to transport their weapons of war throughout the galaxy. The board did not want to spend the money that would have been require to build, battleships, stellar cruisers, transports, and flagships, so the board decided to convert existing Lucrehulk-class cargo freighters into veristialle warships. These Lucrehulk cargo haulers were originally manufactured by the Hoersch-Kessel Drive and is a massive starship that has more than 3,000 meters in diamaeter. The first step the Trade Federation made in modifying these massive haulers was to install a network of laser cannons. A typical Trade Federation control ship is equipped with 42 quad laser emplacements, and each of the ships also carries a small army that consits of if 6,250 tanks (ATT's), 550 large transports (MMT's) and 50 landing ships, and can unleash 1,500 droid starfighters. The droid control ship is just another modified version of the battleship and the only differance is that a massive central control computer is install onboard, which is located in the heart of the vessel and programmed to create protocols for the Trade Federations various droid units which include, battle droids and droid starfighters. The commands from the control computer are sent out via a broadcast transmission towers mounted on top of the vessl's centrisphere. The battle droids send back battlefield data to the 16 signal arrays, and in turn the central computers quickly evaluate the data and send out adjustments as nessary. The commands from the computer can be overridden by the commanders if they wise. Even though there were countless modifications it is extremely appartent that the cargo haulers were never designed for war, the emplacements that were added on provide only limited fields of fire. During battles enemy pilots could explote the weakness of the fields of fire limitations by flying really close to the ship, and in addtion the ships have extremely voilitle reactors. After the Battle of Naboo the Old Republic ordered the Trade Federation to dismantile its army. The Trade Federation preteneded to comply with the order, and seemingly dissassembled its control ships but actuallt just turned the centrispheres into detachable core shipts. These detachable cores were used during the Battle of Geonosis and during the retreat they flew back up into space and attached themselves back to the circular outer ring. After the Clone Wars the few remaining Trade Federations Battleships found there way into the hands of the Corporate Sector or were purchased by wealthy merchants. | |
